English 2 and 3 are designed to provide students with a wide selection of literary works which stimulate interest and develop and appreciation for literature. English Make-up utilizes the California Department of Education recommended literature Students learn the writing process, organizational techniques and oral presentation skills.
Lessons are developed in accordance with English-Language Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools and the ESLR' s adopted by Chaparral High School. Student achievement is measured based on progress towards the mastering of the standards through the use of various assessment tools such as portfolios, test, written evaluations and rubrics. The completion of these courses (10 credits each) is a graduation requirements.
Curriculum will be selected from the following materials: Prentice Hall Literature: Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes, Recommended Readings in Literature, Grades Nine Through Twelve, Advancing Vocabulary Skills, Videos (see video list) and reference materials (i.e.) dictionary, periodical, internet).
Rules and Procedures
Introduction- Rules and procedures are fundamental in life. We follow rules and procedures in our daily lives for things such as approaching a traffic light, starting a car and driving, and shopping. There are also rules and procedures in this classroom. These rules and procedures ensure a positive atmosphere in the classroom. They contribute to a controlled learning environment for everyone.
Procedures for Entering the Classroom
There is a specific way I want you to enter the classroom. I expect you to follow these procedures:
1. You are not to stand or wait at the entryway.
2. Enter the classroom quietly without running or pushing.
3. Get your folder and class materials. Sharpen your pencil if needed (never use the sharpener during instruction).
3. Take your assigned seat
4. Copy the Learning Goal and Assignment.
5. Wait for further instructions from the teacher.
If You Are Late - You are late to class if you are not in your seat when the bell rings. If you are late to class you must:
1. Walk in quietly making as little noise as possible.
2. Take your assigned seat.
3. Join the activity in progress.
4. If you are unsure of what to do, raise your hand until I notice you, and try to continue working (waiting) quietly until I get to your desk.
5. Consequences for Tardiness- See Classroom Rules and Consequences.
If You Are Absent - It is your responsibility to make-up any assignments or tests in a timely manner when you return from an absence. Follow this procedure:
1. Join the activity in progress. If you don't know what to do, raise your hand and wait until I reach you.
2. At break, before and after school, or before class begins, you may ask for the missing assignment. You may also get this information from a classmate.
3. Tests can only be made up before school or after school and only if previous arrangements have been made.
Assignments and Earning Credi
1. Make sure the assignment has your full name, period and date. This should be on the top margin in the upper right corner of your paper. You may use legible cursive or manuscript style.
2. If there is more than one sheet of paper, be sure your name is on all sheets.
3. It is okay to use the backside of the paper.
4. If you are unable to complete an assignment, place it in your folder in the section labeled "Works-in-Progress."
5. When an assignment is complete, place it in you folder in the section labeled "Credit Record Sheet."
6. Daily, the teacher reviews and evaluates student work. When all assignments are completed for the credit the student will receive the credit. A credit may be earned every 12-14 school days.
7.Completed credits receive the letter grade of is based on what level is achieved by the student on the District Benchmark Test:

8 If you finish all of your assigned work early, you may: read independently, work on assignment for another class, or work on extra credit. Do not talk or disturb others.
9. If you are not told that an assignment is group work, it is to be done individually.
10 When you are working together, you are to share methods and ideas, not just answers; that would be considered cheating, and no credit will be given.
11.If a student talks during the course of taking a test or quiz, their test will be taken, and the student will receive no credit. The incident will also be addressed privately.
Procedure for the End of Class and Class Dismissal - Plan to spend class time on class work and to be on task for the entire class period.
1. When I say, "Close up shop" you may quit working.
2. Remain in your assigned seat.
3. When the bell rings, gather your materials and wait for the teacher to dismiss the class.
Restroom Policy/Water- Restroom visits and thirst quenching should take place during passing periods and lunch break. If you must use the restroom, ask the teacher. You may go to the restroom only if:
1. The class is working on Individual Seatwork
2. You have not abused this privilege in the past
Classroom Rules -
1. Respect the teacher - You respect (don't confuse "like" with "respect") the teacher when you do what the teacher requests, communicate politely, and follow all the classroom rules and procedures. Also, do not touch the teacher's property without permission.
2. Respect your classmates - You respect your classmates when you do not interrupt or disrupt other students' learning opportunities and follow all the classroom rules and procedures. Also, do not touch another student's property without their permission.
3. Respect yourself- You respect yourself when you realize you have value, and one way of increasing your value is through education. You will earn credits and graduate.
4. Profanity, swearing, teasing, or name calling- Do not use obscene or vulgar language, or derogatory racial, cultural, gender or religious references in the classroom.
5. Defacing of property - No tagging, gang style or street writing is allowed anywhere in the classroom including folders.
6. Cell phones - Phones are not permitted in the classroom for any reason. If a cell phone is being used or seen, it will be confiscated and given to the office.
7. Food or drinks- Food and drinks are not allowed in the classroom (opened or sealed). This includes bottled water. No exceptions.
8. Hat/sunglasses/ grooming - Sunglasses or hats are not to be worn in the classroom. NO personal grooming including the application of beauty products.
9.Be productive- When you work consistently, you will move towards your destination: Graduation.
10. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings.
11. ALL SCHOOL RULES APPLY IN THIS CLASSROOM.
Consequences - Everything we do in life has consequences. If you choose to run a red light, you must accept the consequences (traffic ticket, taking someone's life, crashing your car, etc.). Consequences are the things that happen to you when you choose not to obey a rule. This is what will happen if you choose to violate one of the classroom rules:
